Blog Updated

As you may have noticed the blog has been updated. I’ve finally gotten around to self-hosting.

We are now at freenortherner.com. So, if I’m on your blog roll, please update. And thanks for linking to me.

The old site has been redirected. (Thanks Gromar).

Subscriptions should be transferred soon, but feel free to resubscribe. Also, I don’t use RSS, but if you do, you may need to re-add me to your feed.

The theme has been changed, as they wouldn’t let me keep the old theme. Let me know what you think of it.

I think it is readable and without high contrast it’s easy on the eyes, but my aesthetic sense is not shared by all.  If many people find it hard to read I may fiddle with it more.

I’ve been thinking of making the grey slightly brighter and the link red slightly less bright.

There will be more updates now that I have a bit more control.

  1. Definitely use a brighter font. The grey (gray?) is very difficult to read against black background.

I tend to prefer just black font on white background, but if you need to be chic this is fine. Don’t play around with weird color backgrounds and colored fonts!

  2. Good luck at your new address. I have every expectation that the content will be just as good… The “Lightning Round”s are great and also don’t run into enough bloggers posting Aristotle, maybe some more of that… Thank you, “Free Northerner”.

    Best regards,

    J.P.O.

  3. I maintained a site for a political campaign a number of years ago. One thing that helped was creating a test version of the site that mirrored the production site (at least the layout, not the data).

This allowed me to experiment with changes to the site without worrying about corrupting the production site. Once I got everything running/looking good on the test site, I implemented the changes on the production site.

I even do this with the site I have on blogspot. I have a test version of the site that is only visible to me that allows me to experiment with the layout.

  4. I am having a problem reading the grey on black.

How about using the colors scheme you have in the menu bar: a grey block with white characters. Items on the current page like “BlOG UPDATED” would be a horizontal grey block with a white background.

I don’t like the red for links. I suggest you use blue, which looks great on a black background. In fact, I’d go with a black, blue, grey, and white color scheme like this programming environment screenshot: screenshot

Grayscale your logo, then re-add the text in blue (or whatever color you want) and it should work fine with the black background. You might want to fade the left and right edges, as the look cutoff on a large screen.

  5. Cool new look. The colour scheme looks good, and the text in the posts seems bright enough, though the post title, ‘leave a reply’, and ‘posted in..’ are a little on the dark side. But they’re minor quibbles. Also the Blogger.com RSS feed delivered me to your new website without any troubles.

  6. @ NSR: I’m paying the fee for my former WP site to redirect here. I still use the WP platform (it’s a good one), but I’m self-hosted. I don’t see your e-mail on your site.

@ 8to12: The blue links would probably be better. I’ll look into it.

@ AAB: Good to hear the RSS feeds are working normally. I haven’t lost any traffic, so I think everything worked out fine.
